May, 2017 : The presidential election in France witnessed no political candidate achieving a clear majority, with candidates from the traditional political parties also failing to impress. All eyes are now on the runoff election scheduled on 7th May, 2017 between Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen from En Marche and National Front political parties, respectively. Emmanuel Macron, a conservationist wants France to remain part of the European Union (EU), and introduce measures to elevate growth in French economy with business-friendly reforms. On the other hand, his competitor wants France to become politically isolated and fuel economic nationalism, in addition to being in favor of withdrawing from The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
With majority of the political analysts putting their bet on Emmanuel Macron, the country’s Information Communication and Technology (ICT) is expected to hugely benefit, as Macron is expected to introduce significant reforms to boost businesses in the country and work towards further elevating the country’s status as a business-friendly nation, thereby attracting more investments from Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and large corporations in the country’s ICT sector in the coming years. On the contrary, if Marine Le Pen pulls off surprise victory just like Donald Trump did in the US, the ICT sector growth might plunge, as expected change in economic policies of France will affect the business operations of major ICT companies such as SAP, Microsoft, etc. operating in France, thereby hindering the growth of ICT sector.
The major impact of the French presidential election will be on the growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) companies in the country, as France has evolved as a favorable destination for companies such as Facebook, Intel, etc., who have established their AI research labs, and have collaborated with French universities to boost development of AI technology. In addition, France IA initiative by French government has led to deployment of AI technology in over 180 startups for designing and developing various AI based applications, Moreover, ICT companies including telecom giant Orange and, leader of simulation and analysis software Dassault systemes, ESI Group, etc., are also eagerly awaiting the result of 2017 elections, as the result is expected to directly impact ICT companies in France.
