Key Market Drivers
Increasing Prevalence of Visual Impairment &
Eye Disorders
The growing prevalence of visual impairment and eye
disorders is a significant driver of the Europe contact lenses market. Visual
impairment, encompassing conditions like myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and
presbyopia, has been on the rise, prompting a substantial increase in demand
for effective corrective solutions. In Europe, the escalating rates of myopia,
particularly among younger demographics, highlight a crucial market trend. This
surge is largely attributed to modern lifestyle factors, such as prolonged
screen time and a reduction in outdoor activities. The increased exposure to
digital devices and sedentary habits have been linked to the development and
progression of myopia, which has become a major concern for eye care
professionals and has consequently driven demand for corrective lenses that can
address this condition. According to a study titled, “Impact of Clinician Subjectivity on the
Assessment of Dry Eye Disease Prevalence in a UK Public Health Care Patient
Population”, To assess how subjectivity affects the diagnosis rates of dry eye
disease (DED) in an unbiased population, a multicenter study was conducted with
818 participants (465 females, average age 67.1 ± 16.7 years; 353 males,
average age 65.0 ± 15.9 years). Each subject underwent evaluations for
staining, tear break-up time (TBUT), tear osmolarity, meibomian gland disease
(MGD), and the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI). Results showed that
physicians diagnosed 48.7% of participants with DED, with diagnosis rates
varying between 42.9% and 62.3% across different sites. Positivity rates for
staining (≥ grade 1) ranged from 41.3% to 84.1% (mean = 0.8 ± 0.9 grade), TBUT
(< 10s) varied from 39.1% to 61.6% (mean = 10.4 ± 6.6 seconds), tear
osmolarity (> 308 mOsm/L) ranged from 63.7% to 72.4% (mean = 319.7 ± 20.8),
MGD grading ranged from 28.9% to 51.3% (mean = 0.5 ± 0.7), and OSDI symptom
scores ranged from 57.6% to 71.0% (mean = 23.5 ± 20.5) across sites. Among
these markers, tear osmolarity showed the greatest consistency between sites (max/min
positivity = 114%), followed by OSDI (123%), TBUT (158%), MGD (178%), and
staining (204%). DED markers showed little correlation with each other (average
r² = 0.05 ± 0.07). Notably, a significant number of participants (N = 110) had
high symptom scores (OSDI = 32.4 ± 15.7) and hyperosmolarity (338.1 ± 20.1
mOsm/L), but exhibited no other clear signs of DED (MGD grade = 0.2 ± 0.4, TBUT
= 13.5 ± 7.0 seconds, staining grade = 0.4 ± 0.5). In conclusion, subjective assessments of DED
showed considerable variation, whereas objective measurements like OSDI and
tear osmolarity demonstrated greater consistency across sites. Many
participants presented with significant symptoms and hyperosmolarity without
other overt signs of DED, often remaining undiagnosed without osmolarity
testing.
Europe’s aging population is contributing to the
growing prevalence of presbyopia, a condition characterized by the gradual loss
of near vision clarity due to the natural aging process. As individuals reach
middle age and beyond, they commonly experience difficulty focusing on close
objects, necessitating corrective measures. This demographic shift has
amplified the demand for solutions like contact lenses that can offer
multifocal or progressive correction to address presbyopia, allowing
individuals to maintain their quality of life and visual functionality. The
increasing awareness of these eye conditions among the general population has
also contributed to the growing preference for contact lenses over traditional
glasses. Contact lenses provide several advantages that align with modern
consumer preferences. Unlike glasses, contact lenses offer a wider field of
vision and do not obstruct peripheral sight, which is particularly beneficial
for activities that require extensive visual range, such as sports and driving.
Contact lenses eliminate the inconvenience of wearing glasses, such as fogging,
slipping, and aesthetic concerns, making them a more appealing option for many
individuals.
Technological Advancements in Contact Lens Materials
and Design
Technological advancements in contact lens
materials and design are profoundly driving the Europe contact lenses market,
leading to a wave of innovations that are reshaping the industry. One of the
most significant breakthroughs in recent years is the development of silicone
hydrogel lenses. These lenses have revolutionized contact lens technology by
offering vastly improved oxygen permeability compared to older materials. This
enhancement addresses one of the most common issues faced by contact lens
users: dryness and discomfort. Silicone hydrogel lenses allow more oxygen to
pass through to the cornea, which helps maintain eye health and comfort,
reducing the risk of complications associated with prolonged wear. Silicone
hydrogel lenses are just one example of how modern advancements are improving
contact lens performance. The evolution of lens materials has enabled the
creation of lenses that are not only more comfortable but also more compatible
with the natural physiology of the eye. For instance, advancements in lens
designs have introduced various options tailored to different user needs, such
as daily disposables, extended wear lenses, and lenses with specialized
features. Daily disposable lenses provide the ultimate convenience by eliminating
the need for cleaning and storage, thus enhancing hygiene and reducing the risk
of infections. Extended wear lenses, which can be worn continuously for up to a
week or even longer, offer the advantage of convenience for users who prefer
not to remove their lenses daily. In May 2021, CooperVision Specialty
EyeCare’s Procornea DreamLite night lenses have recently obtained approval for
their effectiveness in slowing myopia progression, as evidenced by the CE mark
certification. These orthokeratology lenses are designed for myopia control in
children with a refraction ranging from -0.75D to -5.00D, and a cylindrical
refraction up to -2.50D. Currently, the DreamLite night lenses are available
across Europe, the Middle East, and China, and are prominently featured in the
UK under the EyeDream brand.
Another notable innovation is the integration of
advanced features into contact lenses. Modern contact lenses are now equipped
with technologies such as UV protection and blue light filtering. UV protection
is essential for shielding the eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays, which can
contribute to long-term eye damage. Blue light filtering lenses help reduce the
impact of blue light emitted from digital screens, which is increasingly
important given the growing amount of screen time in daily life. These features
not only address specific health concerns but also cater to the needs of users
who spend significant time in front of computers or mobile devices. The
continuous research and development in lens technology have paved the way for
new and improved contact lenses entering the market. Innovations are not

cumbersome and restrictive, contact lenses provide a full, unobstructed field
of vision. This is particularly advantageous for individuals engaged in
activities that require a wide range of vision, such as sports, driving, or
performing tasks that demand precise visual focus. Contact lenses do not have
frames that can obstruct peripheral vision, making them ideal for activities
where a clear and continuous visual field is essential. The freedom from the
physical presence of frames allows users to engage in various activities
without the worry of their vision being impeded.
Aesthetic considerations also play a significant
role in driving the preference for contact lenses. Many people find contact
lenses more aesthetically pleasing compared to glasses, as they do not alter
the appearance of the face. Glasses can sometimes be seen as a fashion
statement or as a way to express personal style, but for those who prefer not
to wear them, contact lenses offer a way to correct vision without impacting
their appearance. This is particularly appealing to individuals who wish to
maintain a natural look or who are self-conscious about wearing glasses. In
addition to aesthetic benefits, contact lenses address several practical issues
commonly associated with glasses. Glasses are prone to fogging, especially in
changing temperatures or humid conditions, which can be frustrating and
obstructive. They also require regular cleaning to prevent smudges and ensure
clear vision, adding to the maintenance burden for users. Contact lenses
eliminate these issues, offering a more hassle-free solution. They do not fog
up, smudge, or require frequent cleaning, making them a more practical option for
daily use.

Recent Developments
- In January 2024, researchers
have developed innovative contact lenses designed to diagnose glaucoma, an eye
condition that can lead to irreversible vision loss if left untreated. Glaucoma
affects approximately 70 million people globally, yet around half of those with
the condition are unaware of it. Glaucoma typically progresses slowly, often being
detected only during routine eye exams when significant damage may already be
present, according to the researchers. The newly developed contact lens,
created by teams from Northumbria University in the UK and Bogazici University
in Turkey, is capable of monitoring changes in eye pressure, which can indicate
the presence of potential glaucoma.
