Greater Chennai Corporation considers new waste management initiatives

21st July 2023, Chennai, India, - The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is considering introducing measures taken by Rome, Paris and Barcelona to improve the city's Waste Management System (SWM). The GCC delegation visited these cities in June 2023 to study their waste disposal mechanisms and identify effective measures that could be emulated in Chennai.

One of the measures that the GCC is considering is the installation of waste bins with holes in the lid. These bins, which are common in Rome, make it easier for people to dispose of waste without spilling or coming into direct contact with it. The bins will also have colored stripes to indicate the category of waste that should be thrown in them. This will help to improve the cleanliness of the city and make it easier to recycle and compost waste.

Another measure that the GCC is considering is the introduction of a pneumatic waste collection system. This system, which is used in Barcelona, transports waste by vacuum through underground pipes to a nearby interim storage facility and finally to a processing plant. This system would be particularly useful in large apartment buildings where door-to-door collection is difficult.

In addition, the GCC is proposing to install trial scales on its refuse collection vehicles. These scales would measure the weight of waste generated by different users, which would help to identify the sources of large waste. This information could then be used to target waste reduction and recycling efforts.

The GCC is also considering other measures to improve the city's SWM, such as beach cleaning, electric vehicle use, and public education campaigns. The delegation that visited Europe was impressed by the cleanliness of these cities and the enthusiasm of their citizens for cleanliness. The GCC hopes to emulate this culture in Chennai and make the city a cleaner and more sustainable place to live.

Here are some additional details about the measures that the GCC is considering:

  1. Waste bins with holes in the lid: These bins are designed to make it easier for people to dispose of waste without spilling or coming into direct contact with it. The holes in the lid also allow for better ventilation, which helps to reduce odour.
  2. Pneumatic waste collection system: This system transports waste by vacuum through underground pipes to a nearby interim storage facility and finally to a processing plant. The vacuum system is very efficient and can collect waste from a large area.
  3. Trial scales on refuse collection vehicles: These scales would measure the weight of waste generated by different users, which would help to identify the sources of large waste. This information could then be used to target waste reduction and recycling efforts.

The GCC is still in the early stages of planning these measures, but they are committed to improving the city's SWM. They believe that these measures will help to make Chennai a cleaner and more sustainable place to live.

According to TechSci Research report on “India Wastewater Treatment Market By Equipment (Membrane Separation, Biological, Disinfection, Sludge Treatment), By Process (Primary Treatment, Secondary Treatment, Tertiary Treatment), By Application (Municipal, Industrial [Chemical, Pharma, Food & Beverages, Oil & Gas, Metal & Mining, Others]), By Region, By Competition Forecast & Opportunities, 2018-2028”, India Wastewater Treatment Market is expected to grow at a high rate during the forecast period. The growth can be attributed to growing population, expanding manufacturing industry, and rising awareness about new water treatment technologies.
