Kolkata Metro to Boost Solar Power Generation Capacity
In a significant move towards
sustainable energy, Kolkata Metro has announced plans to enhance its solar
power generation capacity by an impressive 2792 kilowatts peak (kWp) in the
current fiscal year. This initiative aligns with the government's vision to
promote renewable energy sources and reduce carbon emissions.
The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation
Limited (KMRCL) aims to harness the abundant solar potential available on the
rooftops of metro stations, depots, and other infrastructure. The expansion
will involve the installation of solar panels across various metro facilities
to generate clean energy. The move is expected to reduce the metro's dependency
on traditional energy sources and make a substantial contribution to reducing
its carbon footprint. The decision to ramp up solar power capacity comes as
part of Kolkata Metro's broader sustainability strategy. With an already
commendable solar power generation capacity of 170 kWp, this new initiative
will significantly boost the metro's renewable energy output. The project is
expected to be completed by the end of the fiscal year.
Apart from reducing the metro's carbon
emissions, the increased solar power generation capacity will also result in
significant cost savings. The metro authorities estimate that the move will
lead to substantial energy savings and a considerable reduction in electricity
bills. This will ultimately help to make Kolkata Metro's operations more
financially sustainable in the long run. The KMRCL has already initiated the
tendering process for the installation of solar panels and associated
equipment. The selection process will prioritize companies with a strong track
record in solar power installations and a commitment to delivering
high-quality, reliable systems.
Once the project is complete, Kolkata Metro will join
the ranks of other eco-friendly metros across the world that are actively
adopting renewable energy sources to power their operations. This move not only
showcases the metro's commitment to sustainability but also serves as an
inspiration for other public transport systems to follow suit. With Kolkata
Metro taking significant strides towards sustainable energy, it is hoped that
other cities and public transportation systems will also take note and emulate
these green initiatives. The integration of renewable energy sources in urban
infrastructure is crucial for combating climate change and building a cleaner,
greener future for all.
