Sustaining Gardens with Recycled Wastewater
The Coimbatore City
Corporation has made ambitious plans to utilize treated wastewater from the
Valankulam sewage treatment plant for irrigating the gardens of the upcoming
Semmozhi Poonga. The state government has allocated the necessary funds to
begin Phase I of the park's development. The current treatment facility
processes 30 lakh liters of sewage water every day, of which 5 lakh liters will
be directed to the park, while the remaining 25 lakh liters will be sent to the
Valankulam tank. A project report is being prepared to ensure the safe
transportation of the treated wastewater to the park. However, to lay the
necessary pipes beneath the highways, the project requires clearance from the
highways department. Additionally, a new sewage treatment plant with a capacity
of 2MLD is being constructed at Valankulam and is expected to be completed in
the next six months. The Coimbatore City Corporation has
issued tenders for the revitalization and transformation of Singanallur Lake,
entailing the reinforcement of the embankment, elimination of the water
hyacinth menace and the installation of a state-of-the-art sewage treatment
plant at an estimated cost of USD0.5 million. The selection of a qualified
contractor is expected to be done within the week, with the project likely to
be completed within a year.
The water quality of the lake
has been severely affected by unchecked inflow of untreated sewage and the
intrusion of water hyacinth. Moreover, encroachment has caused a reduction in
the lake's bund size and the accumulation of silt has resulted in a decrease in
its water-holding capacity. From its original size of 288 acres, the lake has
now diminished to 165 acres, with a maximum flood level of 5.17 meters and full
tank level of 4.25 meters. Additionally, its desilting process has not been
carried out for three decades despite having 845 registered ayacuts.
Under the proposed
rejuvenation initiative, complete desilting of the lake will be avoided.
Instead, specific shallow areas will be deepened, and the excavated soil will
be repurposed to reinforce the bund. To prevent the entry of untreated water
into the lake, a sewage water treatment plant.
