AkzoNobel and Itaconix to Co-Produce Bio-Based Polymers
AkzoNobel
to commercialise bio-based polymers in collaboration with Itaconix
Netherlands:
AkzoNobel, a
global giant involved in the manufacturing of specialty chemicals, has entered
into a cooperation agreement with Itaconix, a United States based subsidiary of
Revolymer which is engaged in the manufacturing of polymers from itaconic acid,
for production of polymers from renewable ingredients. Under the agreement,
Itaconix would deliver a proprietary polymerisation technology which would aid
the conversion of itaconic acid to polymers. This itaconic acid would be
obtained from sugars through fermentation. AkzoNobel would be responsible for
the development and commercialisation of the bio-based polymers.
Techsci Research depicts that
the strategic agreement between AkzoNobel and Itaconix to co-produce bio-based
polymers is expected to strengthen the companies’ penetration in superabsorbent
polymers market across the globe. Additionally, various unique properties
offered by these bio-based polymers in applications ranging from water quality
to cleaning and hygiene is anticipated to increase AkzoNobel’s market share in
the coming years. Moreover, the innovation involving the use of renewable
ingredients is a step further for our Planet Possible sustainability agenda of
doing more with less.
According to recently
published report by TechSci Research,
“Global
Superabsorbent Polymers Market By MOC (Sodium Polyacrylate,
Polyacrylamide Copolymer, etc.), By Application (Baby Diapers, Adult
Incontinence Products, Feminine Hygiene Products, etc.), By Region, Competition
Forecast & Opportunities, 2011-2021”, The Global Superabsorbent Polymers
Market is anticipated to grow at a healthy pace during 2016-2021. The
superabsorbent polymers are majorly used in personal care sector as an
absorbent material in baby diapers, adult incontinence products feminine, so
the growing awareness regarding personal hygiene is expected to increase the
demand for superabsorbent polymers from its personal care sector. The high
water retaining capacity of superabsorbent material is instigating their demand
in agriculture, medical and construction industries. Superabsorbent polymers
are used in water conservation technique in agriculture, where it is utilized
as a water retaining agent in soil for improving
the crop yield. Growing population, increasing food security concerns along
with decreasing arable land is expected to escalate the demand for
superabsorbent polymers from agriculture industry.
