World’s Largest Street Light Replacement Programme Launched in New Delhi
Two
Hundred Thousand Street Lights Replaced with LED street lights in the South
Delhi Municipal Corporation Area
India: World's largest LED street light replacement project
was completed by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) in South Delhi
wherein two hundred thousand conventional street lights have been replaced with
energy efficient LEDs. Furthermore, second phase of the project which plans to
install 75,000 more LED lights in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC)
area has been launched. This phase specially focuses on the installation of LED
light in parks, dark spots and high mast lights. A dedicated Street Light
National Programme (SLNP) app for immediate resolution of the complaints about
faulty street lights was also launched.
This
initiative under the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP) being
implemented by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited of Ministry of Power, Government
of India, is expected to save 61 crore units of electricity per year, thereby
reducing the electricity bill by 54 per cent. The installation of LED street
lights in Delhi will help curb release of carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere
by 44,000 tonne per year.
TechSci
Research depicts that a significant amount of energy is consumed in New Delhi
for street lighting purposes. The replacement of conventional lights to LED
will help in reducing the energy consumption and would also increase the
penetration of LEDs in New Delhi. Moreover, due to high life of LED related
products, the replacement demand for street lights is also expected to reduce
at a significant rate. The companies offering LED street lights are also set to
benefit through government contracts.
According to a recently published report
by TechSci Research, “India
LED Lighting Market By Type, By Application, By End Use
Sector, Competition Forecast and Opportunities, 2011 - 2021”, LED lighting market in India is
projected to register a CAGR of over 30% during 2016-2021, due to increasingly
affordable prices of LED lights coupled with implementation of LED bulbs
distribution scheme by the government of India at subsidized rates. Demand for
LED lights in India is predominantly concentrated in the South and North
regions due to high population density, increasing urbanization, rising number
of government initiatives that encourage use of LED lights, etc. In 2015, LED
lighting market in India was dominated by LED bulbs and lamps, followed by LED
batten lights; and this trend is forecast to continue through 2021. Philips,
Surya Roshni, Havells, Syska LED and Osram are few of the leading players in
India LED lighting market. Outdoor lighting applications, which includes street
lights, lights in parks, traffic lights, garage lights, parking lots and other
public places, accounted for a majority revenue share in India LED lighting
market in 2015.
