Osram Launches IR Topled D5140 LED for Fitness Bands Sensor Applications
Malaysia: Osram Opto Semiconductors introduces a new photodiode
which requires less pc board space. Infrared Topled D5140 enables more compact
sensors to be produced for monitoring fitness levels just like fitness armbands.
It uses red or green light to measure precise heart rate by optimizing the
spectral sensitivity and the product can also be used as an ambient light sensor.
Heart rate measurement occurs when the light
hitting the skin’s surface is absorbed by the detector. The blood in the
arteries absorbs more light than the tissue surrounding it, the detector signal
strength changes according to the volume of blood where the light passes.
IR Topled D5140 is the updated version of the SFH 2440
photodiode and uses the previous model as the basis of new component.
Previously the model is offering packages which had to be soldered to side
legs. Because these legs are not used in the new design, the Topled D5140 is
around 1.4 mm shorter, now measuring 5.1 millimeters (mm).
TechSci Research depicts that the both model
has an identical electrical and optical properties and with the short switching
time of typically 90 nanoseconds, the spectral sensitivity optimized for
visible light is particularly noteworthy, with a maximum sensitivity of 620
nanometers. Although the sensitivity of to the two photodiodes are suppressed in
the infrared spectral range. These product developments are set to benefit
Osram grow in this niche market.
According to a recent
report published by TechSci Research “Global
Infrared LED Market By Application (Imaging,
Lighting, Surveillance, Automotive & Others), By Region (Asia-Pacific,
Americas, Europe, and Middle East and Africa) and Competition Forecast and
Opportunities, 2010 – 2020’’,
the global infrared LED market is projected to grow at a CAGR of more than 9%
during 2015-2020. Major factors propelling growth in the global infrared LED
market include rising use of infrared LEDs in smartphones for iris recognition,
and increasing use of these LEDs in CCTVs and surveillance systems.
Asia-Pacific is the largest regional market for infrared LEDs in the world, due
to the increasing penetration of these LEDs in smartphones, automotive,
surveillance systems and other segments. Epistar Corporation, Nichia
Corporation, Everlight Electronics, High Power Lighting, etc. are among the
major Infrared LED companies involved in manufacturing infrared LEDs for
various end user applications.
