Mozambique Reveals Chosen Contractors for 30MW Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Projects

ARENE, the energy regulatory authority of Mozambique, has unveiled its selection of four preferred bidders for the establishment of two 30MW solar photovoltaic (PV) projects.

These projects were put out for tender to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in November of the preceding year and encompass the full development, financing, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of each facility. The chosen bidders emerged through a competitive tender process with prequalification, with ARENE fulfilling the role of the Procuring Authority.

The four companies shortlisted for the projects are ACWA Power, JCM Power Corporation, Total Renewables Energies, and Voltalia SA.

Mozambique, a nation nestled on the southeastern African coast, is blessed with abundant natural resources, and one of its most exceptional assets is its bountiful sunlight. The solar power market in Mozambique has attracted escalating attention in recent times as the country strives to meet its burgeoning energy requirements while concurrently advancing toward sustainability and diminishing its dependence on fossil fuels.

Recently, Syrah Resources, a graphite mining company, has successfully initiated the operation of its solar and battery hybrid system at its Balama operations in Mozambique. This comprehensive system comprises an 11.25 MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) array seamlessly integrated with an 8.5 MW/MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

The outlook for Mozambique's solar power market is exceptionally promising, with several pivotal developments on the horizon:

Capacity Expansion: The government has set ambitious targets for augmenting the solar power capacity. This entails investments in utility-scale solar projects and off-grid solutions, with the aim of significantly enhancing Mozambique's solar capacity.

International Collaboration: Mozambique continues to be an attractive destination for international investments and collaborations. Partnerships with organizations and governments that are resolute in their commitment to sustainable energy development will play an influential role in the sector's expansion.

Off-Grid Solutions: Off-grid solar solutions are poised to play a pivotal role in reaching remote and underserved communities. Initiatives that bolster decentralized energy generation and distribution are expected to gain momentum.

Technology Advancements: Ongoing advances in solar technology, including the development of more efficient photovoltaic panels and energy storage solutions, will substantially enhance the sector's overall performance and appeal.

Job Creation: As the solar sector continues its growth trajectory, it will create numerous employment opportunities, spanning manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and research and development. This is set to make a significant contribution to overall economic development.

Community Engagement: Engaging local communities in solar projects and fostering the adoption of sustainable energy practices will instill a sense of ownership and contribute to the enduring success of these initiatives.

Mozambique's solar power market represents a compelling opportunity for the sustainable development of energy resources in a nation blessed with abundant solar assets. While challenges undoubtedly exist, the proactive policies of the government, international support, and ongoing technological advancements are collectively paving the path towards a brighter and more energy-secure future for Mozambique. As the nation harnesses the power of its sunshine, it takes meaningful strides toward the realization of its energy access objectives and a substantial reduction in its environmental footprint.
