Technological
advancements in the last decade has created possibilities for patients with
high risk of health problems to use accurate and unobtrusive medical devices intended
for continuous blood pressure measurement and monitoring. While blood pressure
is measured as a part of standard medical routine to determine an individual’s
overall well-being, continuous monitoring is essential for the diagnosis,
prevention, and treatment of diseases that require immediate medical
intervention. For more than a century, healthcare industry has employed cuff
devices to monitor blood pressure levels, but it has significant drawbacks such
as discomfort, lack of monitoring during sleep or performing other activities,
improper measurements, etc. Besides, missing the fluctuations in blood pressure
during standard intermittent readings may result in blood pressure drops or
significantly high levels, that could lead to severe repercussions and even
death. However, the medical emergency could be avoided with the adoption of non-invasive
and continuous blood pressure monitoring systems as a part of ambient assisted
living.
The modern wearable
devices allow people with high, low, or irregular blood pressure to check their
haemodynamic parameters round the clock, that enhances safety and improves
their quality of life. Addressing these issues, Getinge has recently launched NICCI
Technology, the latest innovation in advanced hemodynamic
monitoring designed to provide continuous and non-invasive blood pressure
monitoring at fingertips and it never misses a beat!
NICCI is an
easy-to-use and flexible device that offers a complete picture of hemodynamic
status. It provides reliable and precise dynamic parameters such as mean
arterial pressure (AP), pulse pressure variation (PPV), cardiac index
(CI), and stroke volume variation (SVV) so that medical staff could
make right treatment decisions related to goal directed fluid therapy (DFT)
at the right time. The monitoring device consists of sensors that comes in
three sizes and two finger cuffs automated to alternate from one finger to
another after no more than an hour for continuous measurement. NICCI can be
used for up to 72 hours at a stretch, which allows anaesthesiologist to assess
patient’s hemodynamic status even before inducing anaesthesia, during, and
post-surgery. The application area of NICCI extends to post-operative care
units, emergency rooms, and cath-labs. The easy click mechanism of the
monitoring unit facilitates faster setup whereas the smart design elements like
integrated cable support and quick key access supports simple handling, making
it user-friendly and convenient.
Based on Continuous
non-invasive arterial pressure (CNAP) technology, NICCI measures blood
pressure in real-time (beat-to-beat monitoring) without any disruptions of
cannulating the human body. CNAP utilizes InfraRed (IR) light sensors
and air chambers to record the patient’s blood pressure waveform with
the means of a double finger cuff. The pulsating blood flow is kept constant by
the counter pressure exerted on the artery by inflating or deflating integrated
cuff and the resulting pressure corresponds to real arterial pressure. When
mounted appropriately, NICCI optimizes the signal in finger cuff prior to
recording regular upper arm BP measurement for calibration and derives
parameters providing valuable information about blood flow, preload, and contractility.
The technology can be utilized for measuring blood pressure continuously in
adults and paediatric patients above the age of 4. The accuracy of Vascular
Unloading Technique is unparalleled for more than two decades.
NICCI earned
prestigious Red Dot Product Design Award 2020 after undergoing extensive
testing procedures for its compact and ergonomic design. Moreover, the panel of
40 jurors appreciated the device for its easy usability and ultimate comfort
while making a diverse selection of entries. The interchangeable sensors
in varying sizes can be immediately attached to the mouse through snap
connection and ensure device fits well in different hand sizes. The device
integrates all the technical components in a space-saving design.
NICCI consists
of advanced components that enhances the quality of treatment and makes the
procedure convenient. The PulsioFlex monitoring platform, a gold
standard for advanced hemodynamic monitoring offers intelligent visualization
so that the medical professional can easily determine the best possible
treatment for patients. TouchScreen with smart user interface provides
quick access to all the important functionalities and Quick access keys
start or stop measurement or trigger a manual NIBP measurement. The intelligent
cable management provides storage for NICCI mouse and cables while the easy
click mechanism helps to quickly set up the device.
Major Advances
in Blood Pressure Monitoring Devices
Omron Platinum Wireless Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitor
The Omron wireless blood pressure monitor is a horizontally
designed, dual display monitor, capable of storing up to 100 readings per user (accommodates
two users only). The advanced BP monitoring system comes with a TruRead technology that
allows one to automatically take three readings consecutively at pre-determined
intervals (15 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds, or 120 seconds), which makes the
device highly customizable for users. The dual LCD display enables the user to
compare the immediate reading with the past readings. The High Morning Average indicator alerts
users with a “HIGH” if the systolic blood pressure if it goes beyond 130 mmHg
or reaches less than 80 mmHg. With wireless
Bluetooth connectivity, the OMRON blood pressure system can be
synced with the OMRON Connect app on iOS or Android for unlimited memory,
graphs, and trend tracking. Also, the contoured and soft OMRON wide-range D-ring cuff comes
with a monitor and is ideal for standard to large arms ranging from 9” to 17” in
circumference.
Withings BPM Connect
The hi-tech and “smart” blood pressure monitor system is an
ideal option for a user that travels quite frequently as the device is portable due to its
compact design. The device can run on battery for long hours, so the user does not
need to care about charging frequently. With a single charge, the user can take
up to 600 readings with
the single-arm
Withings BPM Connect. The device also offers unlimited storage
capacity, and the previous data does not get deleted. You can connect the
device with an option Health
Mate app to share reading and reports with physicians or
family members. Measuring diastolic and systolic blood pressure and heart rate,
the BPM system offers color-coded feedback for hypertension.
Lifesource Blood Pressure Monitor UA-767
Developed by A&D
Medical, Lifesource Blood Pressure Monitor UA-767 is perfect
for users seeking an easy-to-use digital blood pressure monitoring device.
The one-button
operation makes the whole process much simpler as the user
just require to properly wear the arm cuff and press the start button. The
monitoring device has been clinically tested as well as validated for accuracy
by the American
National Standards Institute and the European Society of Hypertension.
The auto-inflate cuff is
one of the best features of the Lifesource blood pressure monitor as it
automatically inflates to the correct pressure during the measurement. The
digital device can be used by multiple users as it offers different arm sizes
catering from medium to large arms. Allowing 90 reading memory capacity,
the Lifesource monitor lets the user review three months’ worth of
measurements. The large
LCD display and buttons on the monitor are easy to read
and the health measurements such as systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood
pressure, and pulse rate. The device is fully backed by a lifetime warranty,
unlike many blood pressure monitoring devices that come with only a one-year or
five-year warranty.
Greater Goods Blood Pressure Monitoring Kit
If you are looking for a budget-friendly and comfortable blood
pressure measuring device, then the Greater Goods Blood Pressure Monitoring kit
is the device for you. The kit consists of an easy-to-use soft fabric cuff and
a large digital LCD
screen that is not only large but also user-friendly. The
device can store more reading than expensive BPMs available in the market and
it also supports two user profiles. The cuff is outfitted with batteries so
that the user does not need to find a plug when outside. The FDA-approved medical device has
a hypertension indicator, an irregular heartbeat detector, and displays blood
pressure averaging. However, some people have complained about the accuracy of
the device when compared to doctor’s office readings.
